Back Pain Q & A

by Thomas M. Kolenda, DC, FASA, FICPA

What is the Most Common Cause of Back Pain?

The most common cause of back pain has to do with both stress and improper lifting techniques. People who don't think through a lift and work under highly stressful situations may use improper lifting techniques that result in an injury. Muscle stress and strain can cause inflammation that pulls and tugs on the spine. The more inflammation that is created, the more pain that can result. The more a person stresses their back by lifting improperly, the more they risk a traumatic injury that produces long-term, chronic pain. It is extremely important to learn proper lifting techniques and use them at all times.

What Methods are Effective at Treating Back Pain?

When it comes to effectively treating back pain of any kind, chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, and deep tissue massage therapy can provide dramatic results. Individuals who suffer from bulging or herniated discs may benefit from the use of an inversion table that lowers the head and allows gravity to gently use the body's own weight to separate the vertebrae giving the disc a chance to reposition itself. Deep tissue massage, chiropractic adjustments, and acupuncture all work to improve circulation and give the body what it needs to function more efficiently and more effectively.

Can Chiropractic Care Treat Pinched Nerves and Other Types of Neuropathy?

Chiropractic care and acupuncture are both extremely effective at relieving pinched nerves and other types of nerve pain. Tingling and numbness can be extremely uncomfortable if left untreated. Chiropractic adjustments help to relieve the pressure that is placed on nerves that are trapped or pinched between muscles or muscles and bone. With the pressure relieved, blood flow can be restored and the pain and inflammation associated with the trapped nerve can be alleviated. The same is true for neuropathy and other forms of nerve pain. Reestablishing blood flow is the key to controlling the pain and discomfort.
