Posture Correction Q & A

by Thomas M. Kolenda, DC, FASA, FICPA

What are the Benefits of Proper Posture?

Proper posture can reduce the pain and discomfort of chronic conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. It can also reduce the risk of lower back injuries. Sitting upright with the back straight and the shoulders erect keeps pressure off of the stomach and abdomen, allowing them to function more efficiently. Proper posture also helps a person to breathe easier. When a person slouches, the pressure of the weight of the upper body can decrease blood flow to muscles and organs in the lower part of the body. Chiropractic adjustments can help correct a person's posture, even if they have slouched or slumped forward for years. These adjustments can strengthen the structure of the upper back and neck and relieve pain and discomfort throughout the body.

Can Poor Posture Cause Stress on the Lower Back?

Poor posture places stress on all sections of the back. The spine is curved to help each section of the back support a specific amount of weight. If a person slouches, it puts excessive amounts of pressure on areas of the body that were not designed to support it. This can result in both pain and inflammation, as well as increase the risk of injury to the muscles and connective tissues in the back. Poor posture also decreases blood flow, leading to numbness and tingling in the extremities. The longer a person slouches, the higher their risk of pinched nerves and inflammation in the joints of the hips and pelvis.

What are Characteristics of Good Posture?

Good posture is characterized by sitting or standing erect, holding the head high and keeping the shoulders level and squared. If a person holds their spinal column erect but continues to drop their shoulders or lower their head, they are still practicing poor posture. Individuals who practice proper posture will often maintain their form even when they are tired. Chiropractors can use adjustments to help strengthen the muscles that support each section of the spine. As the muscles become stronger, it is easier for a person to maintain proper posture for longer periods of time, even when they are suffering from extreme fatigue.
